Jeevan Jyothi began on April 9, 1988 in the village of Pothy, which belongs to Vijayapuram Diocese of the Latin Rite, in Kottayam District, Kerala. The main purpose of opening this house was to work for the spiritual growth of the people who belong to Dalit groups. The parish at Pothy is surrounded by different dioceses like Ernakulam, Palai and Kottayam belonging to the Syro-Malabar Rite, having their own religious congregations whereas the parish of Pothy was without any. With the arrival of the FSM the people were very happy and could rightly say “At last now we have our own Sisters!”

In the beginning the sisters were given a rented house to live in. The community comprised three sisters namely Sr. Priya, the Animator, Sr. Mary Fidelis and Sr. Mercy Mathew. The Parish Priest trained the sisters for parish work, home visits and introduced them to the special culture and ethos of the place. Rt. Rev. Dr. Peter Thuruthikonam, the then Bishop, appointed two sisters as teachers in the diocesan school. Six months later the present house was built by the Bishop and handed over to the sisters and the blessing took place on October 20, 1988. With the help of the VSSS (Vijayapuram Social Service Society) a building for the Nursery school was also constructed and handed over to the sisters. This school has now become the forerunner of the Primary School as many of the tiny tots continue their schooling in the Primary school run by the diocese. The sisters’ presence in the school has brought about lot of changes in the administration, coaching, and in the strength of the students.

In keeping with the ideals of Marie Virginie, the sisters are active in the parish where they teach catechism, assisting the different pious associations of the parish, visiting families and conducting prayers in the homes.
